The RespEase Method
Introduction
The RespEase sleeping environment will dramatically decrease the symptoms of asthma for most sufferers. There is however more you can do
to further decrease your exposure. Below are a number of tips that will help you to do so.
1. Do not turn the RespEase unit off. Turning the RespEase unit off allows dust to infiltrate the unit and deposit allergens onto the duvet
and pillow.
2. Keep the blind closed when you are not using the sleeping environment. Same reason as (1)
3. Empty out the dehumidifier every other day. The RespEase product maintains a humidity of less than 50% in the sleeping environment.
This low humidity means that house mites cannot reproduce. When the dehumidifier water reservoir is full, the dehumidifier will switch off,
allowing the humidity in the unit to rise.
4. Do not get into bed with wet hair. If you get into bed with wet hair you allow house-dust mites to multiply and infest your bed.
5. When you are vacuuming the room or the house turn the flow of the RespEase sleeping environment up high. Vacuuming stirs up a lot of dust
and a higher flow means that the inside of the unit is better protected. Turn the flow back down 15-30 minutes after finishing.
6. Wear pyjamas which have elastic both at ankles and wrists. An average adult sheds about 1.5 gram (a teaspoon full) of skin per day.
Most of this skin will end up between your sheets. If you have asthma, you are probably allergic to house-dust mites and house-dust mites
feed on skin-flakes. Wearing pyjamas will dramatically reduce the amount of skin entering the sleeping environment, which means less food
for those little blighters. Change your pyjamas every day (having several pairs is easier), and wash them at 60 degrees.
7. Do not allow cuddly toys in the sleeping environment. Cuddly toys can be left outside the unit, on a bedside cabinet, beside the side
window, where it can be seen by the child.
8. Do not leave room-curtains closed during the day. Sunlight shining into a room has a beneficial effect on the air quality in the room,
killing bacteria, mites, fungi and moulds.
9. Regularly air out the room. Opening the windows for an hour or so every day will improve the air quality in the room. However, if the
outside humidity is very high (greater than 80%) keep the windows closed or air the room briefly (10 minutes).
10. If the humidity in the house is very high, keep the door of the room with the RespEase sleeping environment closed as much as possible.
11. Wash bed linen once a week at 60 degrees Celsius. Dry it thoroughly before replacing it on the bed.
